The number of adults in the U.S. that own tablet computers almost doubled between mid-December and early January, according to a new study from Pew Research. The study found that the number jumped from 10 percent to 19 percent during the time period. The research also found eReader ownership grew from 10 percent to 19 percent over the same time period.

The Associated Press announced this morning that CEO Tom Curley will depart later this year and that its board of directors has formed a search committee that will be led by board member and Lee Enterprises CEO Mary Junck. HuffPost: In 2003, Curley joined the AP from USA Today, becoming only the 12th person to lead the 166-year-old news juggernaut. He'll remain on the job until a successor is found to run the organization, which employs more than 3,700 people worldwide.

Steven M. Davidoff, writing as "The Deal Professor," is a columnist for The New York Times' DealBook on mergers and acquisitions. Last year, Davidoff was hired as an expert for the plaintiffs in shareholder litigation involving Dell's acquisition of Compellent Technologies. Writing on April 7, 2011, Davidoff mentioned the deal, but only briefly. On Dec. 7, 2010, after the deal had been announced, Davidoff also wrote about the deal. Neither story mentioned Davidoff's work involving the deal. To be clear, he wrote about this case before he did the consulting, not after.

News Corp. is teaming up with a Colombian television broadcaster to create a Spanish-language broadcast network for the United States, attempting to challenge Univision Communications and Comcast's Telemundo. Variety: Fox International Channels and Colombia's RCN Television Group have formed a joint venture to launch MundoFox, a new Spanish-language terrestrial TV network aimed at the U.S. Hispanic market. Slated to launch in the fall of 2012, MundoFox will seek to bring the Fox Network sensibility and RCN's primetime content to U.S. Hispanic auds.

Newt Gingrich Targets 'Elite Media' (Again) In S.C. Victory Speech (Mediaite)
After a surprisingly resounding win in South Carolina, Newt Gingrich made a victory speech that thanked his supporters while blasting the usual suspects. Those suspects included: President Barack Obama, "the most effective food-stamp president in history"; the media the "elites in New York and Washington"; and radicals in San Francisco. TVNewser: At 7 p.m. ET Saturday, as the polls in South Carolina closed, Fox News and MSNBC returned from a commercial break and made the call that Gingrich had won the primary there. On CNN, no call was made despite exit polls showing Gingrich in the lead. CNN / PressRoom: CNN's Wolf Blitzer explained the importance of waiting for official poll results before projecting a winner. Minutes after he said this, CNN was able to project that Gingrich won the South Carolina primary. TheWrap.com / Media Alley: Did CNN's John King swing the South Carolina primary to Gingrich? That's what several Fox News analysts said Saturday, including former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who said Gingrich should take King out to a steak dinner for his tough questioning during Thursday night's debate. Mediaite: During CNN's election coverage of the South Carolina primary results, Wolf Blitzer "corrected" Piers Morgan for saying that fellow network colleague King "attacked" Gingrich when he asked the former Speaker of the House about the "open marriage" controversy. TVNewser: Saturday morning during an appearance on Fox & Friends, Gingrich didn't think the anchors were being either fair or balanced, saying to Dave Briggs: "Romney's released zero and you're asking me to take seriously a challenge about openness from Romney? Come on, even in the news media you should have some sense of balance. Isn't fair and balanced part of the Fox News mantra?" TVNewser: Someone sent out a fake CNN Breaking News alert early Thursday morning claiming that Gingrich pressured his ex-wife to have an abortion. TVNewser: While it began with fireworks, Thursday night's GOP debate on CNN did not go out with a bang, drawing 400,000-plus fewer viewers than Monday's debate on Fox News. Yahoo! News / The Cutline: The Republican primary debate in Charleston, S.C., Thursday night was a slugfest, with Gingrich leading the ballgame with a home run off CNN starter King, who tried to slip an "open marriage" fastball by the former House Speaker. That is, if you were to borrow a baseball analogy -- which the media has been all-too-eager to do lately. TVNewser: Univision, along with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, has scheduled a "Meet the Candidates" event in Miami Jan. 25, with Gingrich and Rick Santorum committed to attend. AllFacebook: Despite two average debate performances in South Carolina and news that he actually lost the Iowa caucus, Romney is surpassing the other Republican presidential hopefuls in every other Facebook metric, from user interactions to overall fan growth and user engagement. How False Reports Of Joe Paterno's Death Spread And Were Debunked (Poynter / MediaWire)
News spread quickly Saturday evening that former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno had died. Except, he hadn't. Here is an account of how it happened. TheWrap.com: CBS Sports apologized for reporting Saturday that Paterno had died, saying it had fallen "well short" of its own journalistic standards. Paterno's family had quickly denied the report, but not before it was tweeted or reported by a slew of other media outlets, all of which raced to update their initial reports after the denial. Onward State: In a release made by his family to The Associated Press Sunday morning, Joe Paterno's death was confirmed. He was 85. Associated Press: Paterno family: "It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today. His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled."
